The test is administered by Educational testing Service (ETS) (Princeton)
TOEFL is an Internet Based Test (iBT)
TOEFL measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings.

Around 2500 colleges and universities in the United States of America require students from Non-English speaking countries to supply TOEFL scores as part of their application process for two to four year course. The test is designed to test all four language skill that are important for effective communication : Speaking, Listening, Reading and writing.

TOEFL Score not only helps determine English skills to succeed in courses at a college or university in Us or Canada but is also required by many government agencies, programs and licensing/certification agencies to evaluate English proficiency.
